Optimizing Your Metatags

I get asked this question a lot when clients begin digging into their sites and adding pages.  I have a client who was so worried about each facet of the metatags (I know…some say “meta tags” – I use this word together just as I do “website” vs “web site” – but I’m consistent!) and I’m hoping this post will ease his worry!!  This post’s for you Chuck!

The answer is NO (according to Matt Cutts back from 2009), but it’s still good practice to enter keywords in their appropriate spot of your Point2 Agent website or whatever you’re using.

Here’s some basics that we follow…

Title Tag -

The FIRST LINE SEEN – Your Title tag should be anywhere between 70-112 characters – not words.  And we suggest trying to utilize all the space.  A way to test this is to go to any of your web pages and hover over your internet browser tab that shows the browser title for that page.  If any words are “cut-off” it’s too long!  To be considered search engine “friendly” stick to the 70-112 characters.  Stick to page relevancy for every page.

You may use any of the following separators as we’ve seen them all.  The “,” will allow for an extra word or two if you need it.

“|” (up and down slash)
“,” (comma)
“-” (hyphen)
“:” (colon)

Description Tag -

This section can be “sentence format” and should include a catchy phrase including your search related phrases (be page specific).  This is where Google captures a portion of the description and it’s shown in the search results – so think about it…what will make that viewer click on your site versus the other 9 that are on page 1?  We suggest approx. 150-200 characters and the catchy phrase as the second sentence.  We’ve seen all different numbers for this section.  So this is a personal opinion.

Keywords Tag -

Not that this really even matters anymore…but it’s good to have keywords just focusing on search phrases relevant to the page, all lower case, separated with a “,” and a space between.

P.S. Sorry we haven’t been able to move SEO Redefined over to the new platform yet…still finishing up FirstCoastDesigns.Com and bombarded with design work, social media, and WordPress work, but I’m not complaining by any means!!  I always appreciate the business!  We’ll have both sites upgraded soon!  You can still visit both though.

Want to Raise Your Google PageRank?

PageRank is nothing but the measure of a website’s visibility over the web. So the only way to get a higher PageRank is by getting some quality backlinks to your website. One very important factor to keep in mind is the fact that Google is against attempts made by webmasters to unnaturally increase their PageRanks.

This means Google is against link farms, link selling and any other practice which has been specifically developed to increase the PageRank of a website in an unnatural manner. Google considers such attempts as a manipulation of its ranking algorithm and can even penalize websites found guilty. Google clearly explains this on its website.

One easy way of generating links in involves searching the internet to find relevant sites that are either vertically or horizontally related and asking them for a link exchange. Links ‘brought in’ in this manner are more effective and can help successfully increase the PageRank. In addition to getting links from websites, getting links from quality directories is another way to increase your link popularity.

You can also generate inbound links through article submission and press releases among others.  You can also carry out a Link Exchange Program through your website.
